Once achieved, the values of all the previously unknown x(i) variables are the solution to the problem. Now the Solver can solve to a tolerance (Value of) say 1.0e-4. So the SQRT(SUMSQ(d(i)), becomes the Objective Cell. It is a trivial matter in a spreadsheet to set up an array or list of equations for unknowns, with a set of knowns (or targets) so that all the differences (d(i)) are calculated for the i equations as

Generally, j>i so if we set almost any set of j-i variables as knowns, the system of equations will solve for the remaining set of unknown x(i) variables. Y(i) represents the results of i equations In fact one of the most useful applications of the Solver is to solve for values of 1.0e-4 or 1.0e-5. It is just the matter of following the value of the Objective Cell as displayed in the Excel status bar while the Solver is solving. Please note that this issue is absolutely I would be grateful for any assistance in this regard. Perhaps as a Microsoft Agent, you could take this on board and, with hopefully better leverage than me, actually get someone either in Frontline or Microsoft to haveĪ look at the issue at least in the context or providing customer support and ensuring that your combined product (Excel) is improved. I just can't believe it would be that hard to do. All I would like, is for someone in Microsoft and/or Frontline to build and run their own simple testcase,Ĭonfirm the result and have it fixed.
#Useful frontline solver excel formulas code
It seems reasonably apparent to me that somewhere in the code inside the Solver Add-in, there is a small fault that applies to the Value Of case. It is just a display issue while solving in one mode of operation. As I said, the Solver itself works just fine. This is not about the Solver achieving a solution or operating properly in terms of achieving a solution. When operating in either the min or max mode, the value is The issue I am reporting and looking to have addressed, is simply the reporting of the Objective Cell value to the Excel status bar while the Solver is solving in the mode "Value of" mode only.

Please have another look at the Solver dialogue box. The Solver not only finds a minimum or maximum but will also drive the Objective Cell to a user supplied value. Most recently I tried again just a week or so ago and was again brushed off to Microsoft. Obviously without any result as they continually respond that it is a Microsoft issue or they condescendingly suggest that the model I am running is the problem. I have tried to get Frontline to address and resolve this issue for a number of years in fact. Possibly one of the most useful facilities within Excel and I have used it for decades. I do understand that the Solver is an add-in.
